Students’ expectation management of the results

Most students thoroughly go through their newly enrolled units’ requirements before a semester starts to set up a study plan. It gives them a guidance of when they should focus on what, to maximise their achievement. Students often re-adjust the plan to be more strategic based on the marks they get throughout the semester. When a unit turns out unexpectedly difficult, a goal for the unit may change from achieving ‘Distinctive’ to ‘Pass’, and make it up from other units, for example.

Time-consuming data gathering

The key information to gauge the in-semester performance is, the hurdles, assessment weights, and marks. Those pieces of information are, unfortunately, scattered across multiple places. Students often juggle among the handbook, the unit overview, and the Grade Book to understand the unit requirements and their performance correctly.

The very typical place to refer to is the Grade Book on the LMS. The….

Time-sensitive information

Also, on a mark release day, some students say that they check the Grade Book multiple times, hoping their result is out. It is because the mark and feedback guide the students to find where to improve on a current assessment to submit next. Students make ongoing adjustments to their work based on the marks and feedback they receive.

Along with a clear numeric grading system, ‘80 out of 100’ for example, students sometimes see descriptive marks like ‘Demonstrated’ or ‘Competent’ on their Grade Book without much of explanation. Without the range context, the result was not very helpful for study planning for the future,…..
